Our Verdict
Is Private Internet Access Worth It?

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a long-standing VPN built for users who want deep control over their security without paying a premium price. With one of the largest server networks in the industry—spanning 90+ countries with servers in all 50 US states—and fully open-source apps, PIA gives technically inclined users the kind of transparency and customization that most VPNs simply don't offer.

PIA pairs its massive infrastructure with a court-proven no-logs policy, Deloitte-audited privacy practices, and unlimited simultaneous device connections on every plan. Add in features like customizable encryption levels, port forwarding for faster torrenting, multi-hop with obfuscation, and the MACE ad/malware blocker, and PIA delivers serious value—especially for users who like to fine-tune their VPN experience.

Overview

Private Internet Access has been operating for over a decade and is headquartered in the United States. While the US is a Five Eyes member, PIA's no-logs policy has been tested in multiple court cases where the company had no user data to provide—a rare real-world validation of privacy claims. PIA is owned by Kape Technologies.

Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux (with full GUI), iOS, Android, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Opera), and routers.

Security & Privacy Tools

PIA offers AES-256 and AES-128 encryption options, letting users choose between maximum security and speed-optimized performance—a flexibility unique among major VPNs. Supported protocols include WireGuard, OpenVPN (TCP/UDP), and IKEv2 on iOS.

The multi-hop feature routes traffic through a VPN server and an additional proxy (including Shadowsocks), combining double encryption with obfuscation to disguise VPN traffic on restrictive networks. MACE, PIA's built-in blocker, filters out domains associated with ads, trackers, and malware at the DNS level.

PIA's no-logs policy has been independently audited by Deloitte and battle-tested in court—including cases in 2016 and 2018 where the company was unable to provide any identifying user data in response to government requests. The entire server network runs on RAM-only infrastructure, wiping all data on every reboot.

How to Get Started With Private Internet Access

Download the app from PIA's website or your device's app store, log in, and hit the connect button—setup typically takes just a few minutes on any platform.

For quick connections, the app auto-selects the best available server. For more control, browse the full server list with real-time ping indicators to find the fastest option near you.

PIA supports unlimited simultaneous connections, so every device in your household can stay protected under a single subscription.

Advanced users can dive into protocol selection, encryption levels, split tunneling rules, and port forwarding settings—all accessible through clearly labeled menus.

Private Internet Access Customer Support

24/7 live chat with support agents available in nearly all languages—no email or personal info required to start a conversation.

Extensive knowledge base with setup guides, troubleshooting articles, community forums, and detailed documentation for advanced configurations including Linux and router setups.

User Experience

PIA's interface is clean and compact, centering around a simple connect button with the full server list just one click away. Under the surface, the settings menus offer a depth of customization—protocol switching, encryption levels, DNS configuration, automation rules—that power users will appreciate, while essential security features come pre-configured for anyone who prefers a simpler experience.

The apps are consistent across platforms, with PIA standing out as one of the few VPNs to offer a full graphical interface on Linux rather than requiring command-line setup—a genuine differentiator for desktop users on open-source operating systems.

Bottom Line

Private Internet Access combines one of the industry's largest server networks with the kind of open-source transparency and granular customization that privacy-focused users actively seek out.

Its US jurisdiction is a fair consideration, but PIA's court-proven privacy record, Deloitte-audited logging practices, and RAM-only infrastructure make a strong practical case for trust. For users who want maximum control, unlimited devices, and excellent value, PIA consistently earns its place among the top-tier VPN options.

4+ years of consistent and reliable service

I have been using Private Internet Access (PIA) for over four years now, and it has been an excellent experience. It is one of the most affordable VPNs on the market, but it doesn't compromise on quality. Throughout all these years, it has never let me down. The connection is stable, the speeds are great, and the service is incredibly consistent. If you want a VPN that is proven to work in the long run, PIA is the way to go.

Lon term user exceptionally satisfied!

I have used PiA for several years now whilst also trying and dropping other VPN services. I have only once in all that time suffered any kind of difficulty with them and in fact the issue was centered around an outage which encompassed large portions of the internet and was certainly not their issue alone. When all said and done, they`re decently cheap and cheerful with borad reaching and very stable coveraghe and I have absolutely no complaints about them nor indeed any reason to look elsewhere. Keep up the good work PiA!

A very reliable VPN service with superb customer service. I forgot to cancel my renewal as i no longer need to use a VPN, and panicked a bit when the payment went out. I looked up how to request a refund on their FAQs , sent the information they specified, and the refund notification was received about 2 minutes later. Much appreciated.

Easy to use on different Operating Systems

I have been using PIA for over 3 years. They have servers on every country in the world. The connection is established quickly, as long as you keep the software updated. I also value that PIA is available on different Operating Systems, as I use Linux, Windows and Android. It works perfectly well on all of them. In some VPN servers on countries far from my home country, I have noticed that sometimes the transfer rate is limited to 64K, or a bit more, but still very low. I don't know why the rate limit but that connection only allows for some internet browsing. Also, sometimes, I have seen transfer rate limits of 5 Mbs at VPN servers on countries close to mine. In other ocasions, the same servers don't have any rate limit I have seen transfer rates of up to 9 Mbs. In summary, I'm happy with PIA, it is easy to use, the connection is quickly esbablished and if the speed rate is low, you can always pick another VPN server.
